Two Days of Dialogue between AGRA and Civil Society Lays Groundwork for Collaboration toward a Food-Secure Africa

NAIROBI (16 July 2010) – The first-of-its-kind forum between the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and civil society organizations (CSOs) from across Africa concluded today in Nairobi. The two days of dialogue were convened by AGRA to consider how to reach a common agenda for achieving an African Green Revolution when the ultimate goal is the same for all parties—food security for a continent where too many people suffer from hunger and malnutrition.

AGRA and Lundin for Africa Partner with Injaro Investments to Invest in the West African Seed Industry [Français]

Nairobi (19 July 2010)— The West Africa Agricultural Investment Fund (“WAAIF”) and Injaro Investments Limited (“Injaro”) today announce the First Closing of the first ever West African fund focused on investing in indigenous seed production companies. The initial investors in the fund are The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and the Lundin For Africa Society, a Vancouver-based foundation. The launch of this fund will provide capital that is desperately needed by West Africa’s critical but nascent seed production industry.

Delivering Improved Seeds to Smallholder farmers in Mali Wins Mme Coulibaly Prestigious African Business Award in London [Français]

London (22nd June 2010) – Madame Coulibaly, a seed company owner who is supported by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) to distribute improved seed varieties to farmers in Mali, was honored last night at the International African Business Magazine awards ceremony for using innovative business strategies that are helping eliminate poverty and hunger among smallholder farmers.

It is such an honor and a great privilege for me to address this distinguished forum today, for it is indeed a very special gathering in honour of a very special man. President Carter, I was moved by your tribute to Dr. Borlaug. Listening to you talk, I was overcome again with the sadness of losing a man outstanding is so many ways – a famous scientist, a visionary, a friend, mentor and, of course, the father of the Green Revolution.

New Publication: The African Seed Company Toolbox

The African Seed Company Toolbox is a collection of tools written for managers of seed companies in sub-Saharan Africa working with smallholder farmers. The tools cover a variety of topics in three general areas: production, marketing and distribution, and business management. Included as part of the Toolbox is a set of interactive exhibits which can be customized for individual company use. The Toolbox was constructed by Aline O’Connor Funk, based on input and questions from the managers of 20 African seed companies, and was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

G8 Calls for Decisive Action to End Hunger, Recognizes Role of CAADP and AGRA at L'Aquila Summit

World Leaders have called for decisive action to end hunger and acknowledged the positive contributions of AGRA to achieving this goal, in a joint statement on global food Security by world leaders gathered in the Italian town of L'Aquila for the G8 summit. The statement called for the urgent need for decisive action to free humankind from hunger and poverty.

Grieving the Death and Celebrating the Life of Dr Norman Borlaug

The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa grieves the passing of Dr Norman Borlaug, the father of the Green Revolution and an infinite source of inspiration in the cause of ending hunger and poverty. We celebrate his life, his dedicated work and passionate resolve. It was through Dr Borlaug’s efforts that farmers across much of Asia and Latin America were able to grow enough food to avert famine and save the lives of hundreds of millions of people.
