Western farmers to get support to improve soil fertility

Partnership Launched to Tackle Acidic Soils and Food Insecurity in Western Kenya
AGRA, along with the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) and other community partners launched a critical effort to counteract soil acidity which cuts maize yields by at least 30 percent. In Kenya’s western and central provinces, 7.5 million hectares of land are highly acidic, a problem shared by large parts of Ethiopia, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia.
Lessons from the Global Food and Financial Crisis: Trade and Development to Unlock Growth in Africa's Breadbaskets
Addressing the Board of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on June 30 in Geneva, Switzerland, AGRA's Dr. Akin Adesina laid out AGRA's new strategy of focusing on Africa's high-potential breadbasket areas. This approach "puts Africa’s agricultural development where it belongs--at the center of the continent’s response to the global food and financial crisis." But, he said, an enabling policy environment, on matters of trade and development, at global, regional and national levels, is needed for success.
